Legal
Privacy Policy
Effective September 30, 2026
The short version.
- You can play without an account. Guests give us nothing but the name they type.
- If you sign in, we keep your email, account ID, username, rating, record and badges so your progress follows you.
- We don't sell your data, we don't show ads, and we don't track you across other apps or websites.
- The iOS app has no analytics. The website uses analytics to see how the game is played.
- You can delete your account and everything tied to it at any time, right in the app.
This policy explains what information Spew (“Spew”, “we”, “us”) collects when you
play Spew on iOS or at spewspew.com, how we use it, and the choices you have.
What we collect
Everyone
-
Your player name. The name you type (or the one we suggest) is shown to your opponent during a match.
-
Match activity. The words you play, the emoji you send and the result of each round. Our game server
holds these only while the match is running and discards them when it ends.
-
A random player ID. The app creates a random ID and stores it on your device so you can rejoin a match if your
connection drops. It isn't linked to your identity and isn't kept after the match.
-
Technical data. Like any online service, our hosting provider processes your IP address and basic request
information (such as device and browser type) to deliver the game and protect it from abuse.
If you sign in
Signing in is optional and unlocks ranked matches, a permanent username and badges. When you sign in we collect:
-
Account details from the sign-in method you choose (email, Sign in with Apple, or Google): your email
address, an account ID, and your name if that provider shares it. If you use Sign in with Apple’s “Hide My
Email”, we only receive Apple’s private relay address.
-
Your game profile: your username, Clash Rating, wins, losses and draws, the badges you’ve earned,
progress toward badges, and which badge you display.
-
Recent opponents: who you played in ranked matches over the last 24 hours. This prevents two players from
farming rating off each other, and it is deleted after a day.
Stored only on your device
Your settings (theme, volume levels, haptics), whether you’ve seen the tutorial, and your random player ID are saved on
your device. They aren’t sent to us except as described above.
On the website only: analytics
spewspew.com uses PostHog to understand how the game is played: pages visited, buttons clicked, game events (like starting or
finishing a match), device and browser type, and approximate location derived from your IP address. If you’re signed in,
these events are linked to your account ID. The iOS app does not include any analytics.
How we use it
- To run matches, including matchmaking, scoring and reconnecting you if you drop.
- To keep your rating, record, username and badges, and to show the leaderboard.
- To keep accounts secure and to prevent cheating, rating manipulation and offensive usernames.
- To fix bugs and improve the game (website analytics).
- To answer you when you contact us.
What other players see
Your opponent sees your player name, your displayed badge, the words you play and the emoji you send. If you’re signed in
and have played a ranked match, your username, badge, rating and win/loss record appear on the public leaderboard. Your email
address is never shown to other players.
Who we share it with
We don’t sell your information or share it for advertising. We only use these service providers to run Spew:
- Clerk: accounts and sign-in.
- Cloudflare: hosting for the website and the game servers.
- PostHog: website analytics.
- Apple and Google: only if you choose to sign in with them.
We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect Spew and its players from fraud or abuse.
How long we keep it
- Match activity: until the match ends.
- Recent opponents: 24 hours.
- Your account and game profile: until you delete your account.
- Website analytics: according to PostHog’s retention settings, and deleted with your account on request.
Your choices
- Play as a guest. No account needed for quick matches, rooms with friends or practice.
-
Delete your account. In the iOS app, open Settings (the gear) and tap Delete account. Your account,
username, rating, badges and friends are deleted right away. You can also email us from the address on your account, and
we’ll delete it, along with any linked website analytics, within 30 days.
-
Access or correct your data. Ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, or to fix something that’s
wrong. Usernames are permanent, but we’ll change one that’s offensive or was set by mistake.
Depending on where you live (for example the EU, the UK or California), you may have further rights, such as objecting to
processing or asking us to limit it. Contact us and we’ll help.
Children
Spew isn’t directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from them. If you
believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us and we’ll delete it.
Security
All traffic between the game and our servers is encrypted with HTTPS. Sign-in is handled by Clerk, so we never see or store
your password.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top. If a change significantly affects how we use your information,
we’ll let you know in the app or on the website.
